About this deal

It’s picturesque, if you’re looking to get murdered. The setting of gothic romances are usually set in a seemingly haunted house or castle. Highmoor gave me major Crimson Peak vibes… in other words: if this house was real I wouldn’t go near it to save my life! this book was the perfect read for spooky season. erin craig is a master when it comes to creating a world shrouded in the dark and the mysteries. this book is dark, gothic, and haunting. this isn't a story that will give you nightmares, but will definitely make you wary of what hides in the shadows.

When Annaleigh's involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it's a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family--before it claims her next. House of Salt and Sorrows is a spellbinding novel filled with magic and the rustle of gossamer skirts down long, dark hallways. Be careful who you dance with... Once there, she's entranced and impressed with her new surroundings. Bloem is stunning. The Duke is a celebrated botanist and the entire estate is replete with vibrant gardens and active greenhouses. I read this book as my first read of 2023 as part of #diversefirst by Horror Spotlight in an effort to support female, non-binary, and other diverse horror authors. When Morella goes into labor, the family stops worrying about Annaleigh and rallies to help her give birth. Her first son is stillborn, so when Ortun leaves the room, Annaleigh and Camille begin to help Morella relax so that she may deliver her next child. She reveals, accidentally, that it was she who entered into a bargain with Viscardi, but that she repents because she became Annaleigh’s true friend. She is the one who killed Eulalie, too, after the girl discovered Morella’s dark secrets. She gives birth to a monster baby, half-her, half-Viscardi. When Viscardi arrives, Morella begs him to kill her and spare the remaining Thaumas girls. He does so.

I was always fond of the topic of beekeeping as my grandfather used to keep bees and I would help him sell the honey on the market. It was so endearing to read about how much Ellerie (the main character) cared about the hive and compared bees to human society, acting as one. But in this case, bees were more loyal to each other than people could ever hope to be. Fisher helps the girls find a magic door, hidden on the island by the ocean god Pontus, which helps them travel to a far-off province and dance at other balls, where no one knows they are supposedly cursed. In Pelage, at the first secret ball they attend, Annaleigh dances with a stranger in a suit with a three-headed dragon on it. He makes her uncomfortable though she cannot understand why. When Fisher professes his love to her, Annaleigh becomes sad, because she cannot stop thinking about Cassius, who is also at the ball, and must reject Fisher’s advances.

Emily Lawrence was an excellent narrator, and she had her work cut out for her voicing the many Thaumas girls as well as a smattering of other characters. I think she did a great job of making the sisters feel distinct from each other - something which may not have come across quite as well in the print version. This is one of those books that you either barely describe or seriously over describe— it's rich, the plot is layered, and some of the magic in the story's structure comes from knowing the movements of the plot and yet being absolutely compelled to savor it anyway for the journey. A really masterful horror-speculative from an author to watch. Unfortunately this was just not it. Verity was SO stupid I couldn’t take it. I don’t know why she needed so many times to be presented with evidence before she finally came to grips with what was happening but her naivety was too much. I hated being in her head and she was so childish. i loved the descriptions of bloem, it was beautiful. in my opinion, i loved getting to see the different traditions in bloem, that were so very different from salann, or highmoor. i loved the speaking flower part, which also made the ending seem so freaking better

Regardless— I look forward to reading more from this author— she sure knows how to build a slow burning book!! i'm going to start off by saying this book is absolutely amazing !! it's dark, creepy, gothic, the world building is stunning. the ghosts really put this book over the top, the plot twists were insane and i didn't see any of them coming !! When their sister Mercy sends word that the Duchess of Bloem—wife of a celebrated botanist—is interested in having Verity paint a portrait of her son, Alexander, Verity jumps at the chance, but Camille won’t allow it. Forced to reveal the secret she’s kept for years, Camille tells Verity the truth one day: Verity is still seeing ghosts, she just doesn’t know it. Regarding the horror elements...I would only recommend this book to older young adults. This book includes a lot of very descriptive and gory horror elements. There are also a lot of other mental health things going on here like suicide, madness, and self-harm. Just a heads up to anyone sensitive to those topics. This is the 1st of October and this book is definitely suitable for this season. It's eerie and spooky but also aesthetically pleasing with the village-esque vibe. Isolation was a common theme with this one, as the premise is set around the fact that Amity Falls is snowed in each winter with no way to seek extra supplies, while the yearly supply run is cancelled when the men who try to leave town are all killed by unknown monsters. The slow decay of mental health in an isolated environment is common with these books, and that’s present here, too. The almost claustrophobic feeling of it reminded me of the pandemic more than anything else, though, and I’m wondering if that’s where Craig got some of her inspiration. The romance between Verity and Alexander was so pure and it was sweet watching it evolve. Verity has never had any sort of relationship like this, so she struggled a bit fitting her experiences with her expectations.
